Brew the espresso and let it cool slightly. If using, stir in the Marsala wine.
Separate the eggs. In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks with the sugar until pale and thick.
Gently fold in the mascarpone cheese until smooth and well combined. Be careful not to overmix.
In a separate clean bowl, beat the egg whites with a pinch of salt until stiff peaks form.
Gently fold the egg whites into the mascarpone mixture in two additions, being careful not to deflate the whites.
Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the cooled espresso mixture and arrange them in a single layer at the bottom of a serving dish.
Spread half of the mascarpone cream evenly over the ladyfingers.
Repeat with another layer of espresso-soaked ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone cream.
Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
Before serving, dust generously with cocoa powder.
