Ingredients
- All-purpose flour3 cups
- Baking powder1 teaspoon
- Salt1/2 teaspoon
- Lard or shortening1 cup
- Sugar1 cup
- Anise seeds1 tablespoon
- Egg1
- Brandy or orange juice1/4 cup
- Cinnamon sugar1/2 cup

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
In a separate bowl, cream together the lard or shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
Stir in the anise seeds and egg. Gradually add the brandy or orange juice, mixing until well combined.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes (traditional shapes include stars and crescents).
Place cookies on ungreased baking sheets.
Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown.
While the cookies are still warm, sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar.
Let cool completely on the baking sheets before serving.
